Scoring rubric

What separates a 7 from an 8

The IELTS writing and speaking scales judge four criteria. Here they are in plain English for bands 7 to 9, so you can read your own essay against the descriptors instead of guessing.

This is a plain-English explanation of the public band descriptors, written for practice purposes. It is not the official descriptors document and does not replace the examiner's judgment.

How to use this

Band by band, the four criteria move together: better structure, better vocabulary and better grammar tend to appear in the same essay. Read your response once per criterion, be honest about the weakest match, and treat that band as your working ceiling until the signals in your writing catch up.
